What is Swedish Massage

An article from Cheap Back, Neck, Foot and Shiatsu Massagers
Swedish Massage is the most widespread type of western massage, usually just known as 'a massage'. It uses firm, gentle pressure, with massage oils to produce a feeling of deep relaxation, ease tense muscles and stress relief. This is acheived by applying a rubbing motion in the direction of blood flow to the heart in order to increase the oxygentaion of the blood and to release toxins from the muscles.

It is said to increase the flow of waste products (lactic acid, uric acid) from the muscles so helping decrease recovery time from muscular exercise and to aid blood circulation. The rubbing motion stimulates the skin and soothes nerves.

The techniques of Swedish Massage include kneading (petrissage), friction, rapid tapping (percussion), vibration, gliding strokes (effleurage), bending and stretching.
